KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The NABC has selected the University of Mississippi, Slippery Rock University, the College of Wooster, Wayland Baptist University and Iowa Lakes Community College as its Teams of the Week for games played Jan. 7-13.
NCAA Division I – Ole Miss
Head Coach: Kermit Davis
Ole Miss claimed a pair of victories over top-15 opponents last week, winning at No. 11 Auburn 82-67 before outlasting No. 14 Mississippi State 81-77. The Rebels limited Auburn to just 32.8-percent shooting overall on Wednesday, and then made 12 threes against their in-state rivals on Saturday. Ole Miss – which is now 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the SEC after being picked 14th in the league’s preseason poll – recorded consecutive wins over ranked opponents for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
NCAA Division II – Slippery Rock (Pa.)
Acting Head Coach: Ian Grady
Slippery Rock went 2-0 last week to improve to 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC this season. SRU opened the week by shooting 60-percent from the field in a 95-84 win at California (Pa.) on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, The Rock handed No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) its first loss of the season by a score of 74-69 – a win that vaulted SRU into first place in the conference standings.
NCAA Division III – Wooster (Ohio)
Head Coach: Steve Moore
Wooster won a pair of NCAC games last week – both of which came on the road. The Fighting Scots forced 18 turnovers on Wednesday in a 78-53 victory over Oberlin, and then erased an eight-point halftime deficit to upset 13th-ranked Wittenberg on Saturday, 73-65. The wins improved Wooster to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
NAIA – Wayland Baptist (Texas)
Head Coach: Ty Harrelson
Wayland Baptist moved into first place in the SAC standings after recording two road victories last week. WBU opened the week by hitting 27-of-30 free throws on Thursday in a 76-75 win over No. 12 Oklahoma City. Then on Saturday, sophomore J.J. Culver made a layup with three seconds remaining to send WBU to a 77-75 victory against Southwestern Christian. The Pioneers are now 12-4 overall and 7-1 in league games this season.
NJCAA/Two-Year Colleges – Iowa Lakes
Head Coach: Troy Larson
Iowa Lakes captured of pair of road victories last week, beating Division I opponent Iowa Western CC 80-74 on Tuesday before outlasting 17th-ranked Des Moines Area CC 85-80 on Saturday. The Lakers’ strong defense forced a combined 32 turnovers in the two matchups. Iowa Lakes is now 12-4 overall and 3-0 in ICCAC play.
